Can It Be That Difficult?
The thief on the cross shows us that salvation is a gift, freely given to us by Jesus. So what do we do with all of Jesus’ teachings about the difficulties and challenges of being a Christian?
Once saved, we are called to be holy. Jesus repeatedly said, “Go and sin no more.” (Jn 5:14, Jn 8:11) We are invited into discipleship; to become followers of Jesus, and to make disciples of others. (Jn 12:26, Mt 28:19-20)
Jesus also said, “I have come to call sinners to repentance.” (Lk 5:32) That thief on the cross repented! We see him mocking Jesus at first. (Mt 27:44, Mk 15:22) Then, in Luke’s account, there is a change of heart. (Lk 23:40-42)
How difficult can discipleship be? Jesus warns that it will cost us our lives. (Mt 4:19, Mk 8:34, Lk 9:23) The apostles suffered and died for spreading the Good News. Jesus warns us to “count the cost” before making this commitment. (Lk 14:28-33) He tells us: “Take up your cross and follow me.” (Mt 16:24, Mk 8:34, Lk 9:23) The only reason to be carrying a cross is if you are on your way way to be executed.
We don’t seek holiness and become disciples to earn salvation. (Eph 2:8-9, Titus 3:5) We follow Jesus out of love, loyalty and gratitude. We spread the word because we love and want the best for others. Being born of the Spirit gives us a new heart, and with it new motives. We want to please our Lord! On our own, working to save ourselves, this is impossible. With God all things are possible – even discipleship!
